Werewolf from Night Director Shares How Humans Used Practical Effects (Exclusive)

werewolf at night Director Michael Giacchino revealed that Man-Thing used hands-on effects during the Marvel Special. The director sat down with Comicbook.com’s Phase Zero podcast to share some stories about the first MCU special. In the course of the conversation, Giacchino has already discussed how they made a life-size version of our dear friend Ted and why they chose to go down this route. Lots of jokes are made about superhero projects and actors playing against empty blue walls and tennis balls. The director did not want any part of it, so he pushed for a full-fledged model of the “monster” for this project. This choice seems to have clearly paid off because people are loving Man-Thing right now.

“When I started, I was like, ‘Werewolf should be practical, let’s build a man. Let’s see how far we can get to that? . “They built a life-size man. He was totally mobile with his eyes glowing red. It was crazy and the hands were all motorized. So, yeah, it was cool. Now, it’s mostly set up so there’s going to be something for the actors to work with.”

The director continued, “I didn’t want to have a guy with a tennis ball at the end of a stick and say, ‘Here’s the monster, look at this here.’ Man-Thing. So, they can connect with him and be with him in the same place. So, we built it all up and our great visual effects team went for it with its amazing effects and bringing it to life in a complete way.”

Where will these characters appear next?

Giacchino also spoke to the Collider about the future of the Bloodstone Elsa, and Ted and Jack Russell at some point. There seem to be many other plans for the wild side of the MCU.

“Well, I love these characters,” said Giacchino. “I mean, the reason I did it was because I like them so much. I think Elsa Bloodstone is a great character and Jack Russell.” “These are the people I have such closeness to. Do I want to do more with them? Sure, I want to do more with them. I have a lot of ideas about things I want to do. We are just at that weird stage now where it seems ‘Okay, well, let’s see what the future holds. I’m in place too, for the first time in 20 years I have nothing to just jump on to the next.’

Are you surprised that they built a real man? Let us know in the comments!
